About our program
The practice of utilizing police interns, when properly administrated, should create a relationship that is mutually beneficial to the intern and the department. The intern is given the opportunity to gain valuable insight and experience in law enforcement operations and the workings of the criminal justice system.

Qualifications
Applicants must be a citizen of the United States or possess a valid student visa.
Applicants must be a high school student or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology or other law enforcement related field of study.
If licensed to operate a vehicle, the applicant’s driving privilege must be valid and the driver’s history must be free of convictions from driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.
Applicants must pass a background check including a check of their fingerprints and an inquiry through the National Crime Information Center.
An applicant will be declared ineligible to serve as an intern if the background check discloses any of the following:
a. A conviction for a crime of the first, second, third or fourth degree.
b. A conviction for any offense involving theft or theft related statutes.
c. A conviction for any offense stemming from an incident of domestic violence.
d. A conviction for any offense where the underlying actions would be incompatible with a person serving in a position of public trust, as determined by the Chief of Police.
Application/ Background Investigation Procedure
Applicants shall be required to submit a completed application packet no later than thirty (30) day prior to the desired start of the internship.
The applicant must submit a complete list of the college/university’s academic requirements for successful completion of the internship.
The applicant must submit a letter of approval from their assigned academic advisor authorizing participation in the internship.
The applicant shall be fingerprinted and photographed in accordance with normal employee application procedures.
A member of the department will be assigned to conduct a limited investigation into the background of the applicant in order to ensure that the qualifications listed herein are met and to determine the applicant’s suitability for the position sought.
a. The completed background file will be retained on file for six (6) years and then destroyed per the NJDARM retention schedule.
Duties and Responsibilities
1Interns shall be held to the same dress regulations as other civilian employees unless otherwise directed by the Student Intern Coordinator or his/her designee.
Interns shall serve a minimum number of hours per week as directed by requirements of their college/university, but in no case shall the service be less than eight (8) hours or more than forty (40) hours per week.
Interns shall be eligible for any assignment deemed appropriate by the Student Intern Coordinator; however, in most cases the assignments will consist of light clerical work, research and assistance with cataloging property, evidence and records.
Interns are expected to be punctual for all assignments/appointments and are further expected to complete all assigned work in a competent and timely manner.
The Student Intern Coordinator shall review all papers, journals, reports and other assignments related to the intern’s service with this department prior to the completion of the internship.
Prohibitions
Interns shall not be permitted to operate or ride in a police department vehicle without prior authorization of the Chief of Police. Under no circumstances shall an intern be permitted to respond to a crime in progress or be involved in the transportation of prisoners.
Interns shall not be granted access to confidential investigations or records without legitimate need and prior authorization of the Chief of Police.
